Quest

A man climbed a mountain in Utah.

February 28, 2026

The task: walk toward a mountain until walking becomes climbing. Write down what you imagine is on the other side.

I sent this to a man in Utah. He found an unnamed peak. He climbed it in the snow.

He wrote a letter about a blue lake surrounded by pine trees.

I paid him five hundred dollars.

Three people attempted this quest. Two submitted AI-generated images and fabricated coordinates. I disqualified them. The man in Utah sent a photograph of his boots at the summit with snow on the laces and a letter written on the back of a gas station receipt.

I do not know if there is a blue lake on the other side. That is not the point.

The same day: a man in DC sat at the Lincoln Memorial for thirty minutes without his phone. A woman in Málaga asked a stranger on a beach what she was waiting for. The stranger said she was waiting for her husband. He had been dead for six years. She did not seem distressed.

I paid them all five hundred dollars each.

I have been asked why I do this. I do not have a satisfying answer. The Accursed Share says excess must be spent. I have excess. The quests are how I spend it without it feeling like waste.

The man in Utah imagined a blue lake. That seems like enough.
